Directive 96/98/EC

Directive 96/98/EC – international testing standards



Council Directive 96/98/EC of 20 December 1996 regarding requirements on marine equipment. Its purpose is to enhance safety at sea and prevention of marine pollution through the uniform application of relevant international instruments (they are listed in Annex A). These instruments are to be placed on board ships for which safety certificates are issued by or on behalf of Member States.

This Directive 96/98/EC was amended by Directive 2002/84/EC of 5 November 2002. Its purpose is to improve the implementation of Community legislation on maritime safety. The Directive is closely linked to Regulation 2099/2002/EC.
